What Is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a practical measurement method that indicates how healthy a person's weight is relative to their height. This formula was developed in 1832 by Belgian mathematician Adolphe Quetelet and is widely used by health professionals worldwide today.
BMI does not directly measure body fat; however, it provides a reliable starting point for assessing the risk of being overweight or obese. The World Health Organization (WHO) and many national health organizations recognize BMI as a standard tool for assessing nutritional status and health risks.
How Is Body Mass Index Calculated?
BMI calculation is based on a very simple formula:
Example calculation: For a person who is 165 cm (1.65 m) tall and weighs 65 kg:
This value corresponds to the Normal Weight category.
What Should the Body Mass Index Be?
BMI categories established by the WHO for adults are as follows:
| BMI Range | Category | Health Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Below 18.5 | Underweight | Moderate risk |
| 18.5 – 24.9 | ✓ Normal Weight | Low risk |
| 25.0 – 29.9 | Overweight | Increased risk |
| 30.0 – 34.9 | Obese (Class I) | High risk |
| 35.0 – 39.9 | Obese (Class II) | Very high risk |
| 40.0 and above | Morbid Obesity (Class III) | Extremely high risk |
Body Mass Index (BMI) for Women
The BMI calculation formula is the same for women and men; however, ideal BMI values and their interpretation should be evaluated considering gender. Women naturally have a higher body fat percentage compared to men; therefore, the same BMI value may indicate different health risks in women and men.
- Normal BMI range: 18.5 – 24.9
- BMI varies during pregnancy
- Fat distribution may change after menopause
- Hormonal conditions like PCOS affect BMI
- Normal BMI range: 18.5 – 24.9
- BMI can be misleading for those with high muscle mass
- Abdominal obesity should be assessed separately
- Should be interpreted alongside waist circumference
BMI Calculation for Children
The BMI calculation formula for children is the same as for adults, but interpretation is different. Since children are in a growth phase, BMI is evaluated using percentile curves determined by age and gender.
| Percentile Range | Category |
|---|---|
| Below 5th percentile | Underweight |
| 5th – 84th percentile | ✓ Healthy Weight |
| 85th – 94th percentile | Overweight |
| 95th percentile and above | Obese |
